Waitts Mountain

28 09 2009

  • Location: Malden, MA
  • Owner: City of Malden
  • Highlights: A very short walk on mostly paved paths in an urban park that leads to a sweeping view of the Boston skyline.  The downside: lots of glass at the summit.
  • Interesting tidbits: Waitts Mountain is the highest point in Malden and a location where people watched the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution (source: Wikipedia)
  • Public Transit: Take the MBTA’s Orange Line to Oak Grove Station and walk 11 minutes to the park.
  • Directions (from Boston): 9.3 miles, 17 minutes
  • Park on Leonard Street.
  • The Trail:  0.3 miles, round trip
    1. Take the paved path uphill from Leonard Street.
    2. At .07 miles, it will reach a fork with a basketball court on the left.  Take the path leading to the right.
    3. At .1 miles, a dirt path will branch off to the left.  Take it to the summit.
    4. Return the same way you ascended.
  • There were no trail maps, but it is a small park and difficult to get lost.
